New TOTAL Operated Digital Well Data

Data is quality controlled at the wellsite by the wellsite geologist in liaison with Operations Geology and an area Petrophysicist.

Following this faxes and ASCII tapes are quality controlled internally within TOTAL by Operations Geology and a Petrophysicist.

Once logging has been completed, print headers are checked by the wellsite geologist and then by Operations Geology on receipt. Final DAT tapes are sent to TOTAL (Operations Geology) who confirm completeness of log runs and intervals.

Tapes are given to the Geological Applications Technician to load and quality control along with a listing of all logs run (including VSP, SEG-Y and dipmeter data) on the well. Geological Applications Technician checks readability of data and header contents (the latter as per CDA requirements).

Tapes are passed on to the Data Management Technician for copying to CDA.

The Data Management Technician informs the Geological Applications Technician of all data sent to CDA. CDA confirm that data have been loaded successfully to the CDA database.

When available, the Data Management Technician will copy the composite log to the Geological Applications Technician. This will allow the quality and completeness of the digital data to be verified.

Geological Applications Technician checks actual data loaded on the CDA database.

Historical Digital Well Data
As part of CDA, there has been an ongoing loading exercise for historical digital well data. In order to do this exercise, TOTAL first tackled wells that had been previously transcribed to CD-ROM (exploration and appraisal). For these wells, digital well curve data from tapes without any problems were sent to CDA.

TOTAL also checked the audit done as part of the transcription, which confirmed the number of logs run in the well, but not necessarily whether there were any digital data as a result. Where possible confirmation was sought from the Final Report as to what digital logs had been run. Digital data were also compared with the composite log where readily available.

A paper copy (audit) of the contents of each tape has been kept and is available for inspection. This audit will be retained for a period of one year after sign off by the DTI of TOTALs wells.

VSP, SEG-Y and dipmeter data were not initially required by CDA and do not form part of the above audit, but will be sent to CDA at a later date.

CDA now require digital data for development wells as part of the historical well data loading exercise. As TOTAL does not necessarily have a complete top to bottom copy of its development wells in Recall (reservoir section only is loaded on Tigress) it is proposed that original well tapes will be sent to CDA in batches of five wells at a time. An in-house audit of these data will be performed at a later date.
